I would like to share some information with my fellow guild members. I spent an afternoon visiting the Lock Museum of America in Terryville, CT. Located in the former Town Hall Building, this collection of collections is a time capsule of keys, locks, safes, handcuffs, photographs, and memorabilia related to the design and manufacture of security devices of all kinds from CT and around the world.
This museum has an early lock of Egyptian origin that is believed to date from 2000 B.C. You can also see a safe from a ship that was in the Spanish Armada, circa 1580. Many of the names associated with American lock making are well represented, inclucing Corbin, Sargent, Russwin, yale and especially Eagle Lock Company which was located in Terryville.
BLACKSMITHS will be interested in the displays located on the second floor in the "Antique Lock Room". THis room contains the Robert Nelson Collection, loaned to the Museum by Jay Nelson of Philadelphia, PA. EACH OF THE TEN WOODEN PANELS IS COVERED WITH EXAMPLES OF HAND FORGED KEYS AND LOCK PARTS. The escutcheons and lock cases show elements employing forging wleding, chasing, repousse, and decrative filing. This room also contains antique locks on oak panels from the American Hardware Collection of New Britain, CT.
The Lock Museum of America is located at 130 Main Street (Route 6) Terryville, CT. The Museum is open to the public daily except Monday from 1:30pm to 4:30pm. The Museum season is May 1st to October 31st. Admission is $3.00 per person, $2.50 for seniors, and children get in for free. -- Roy Zurell
